What the Hell?

April 22nd, 2008

I don't make a habit of ranting about people who work in Retail. I did it myself for over 3 years, and I know how thankless and unrewarding it can be. Still, this just put me over the top...

Trish and I were out running errands tonight, which happened to bring us near a Canadian Tire store. Given that I need to get new tires for my car soon, I decided to check on pricing. I need 205/50R16s, which aren't incredibly common.

I headed to the Automotive Department, where a single employee was standing behind the Customer Service counter. The conversation that followed, though brief, pretty much floored me.

"I'd like to get a price on some tires." I asked.

WH40K: Paint Stripping

April 22nd, 2008

My second article is up at MiniWarGaming.com - this time about Paint Removal. I had intended to do an article about Destroyer Assembly or the basic Necron Paint Job, but I kind of got ahead of myself. The Destroyer photos were fairly blurry and wouldn't make for a good article, and I just kind of got into a flow while painting my troops, and forgot to take pictures :P

Don't worry, there will be plenty more to paint coming up. Until then, have a look at Unpainting Miniatures.

My appearance on YouTube

April 17th, 2008

MiniWarGaming.com just uploaded a Video Tour of the Welland Warhammer Club. In the video, Dave provides a great walkthrough of the club space, and talks a lot about its potential. Toward the end, he also makes his way into my office, with adjoins the Club space.

If you're so inclined, you can watch the video here. Enjoy!

Yes, there is a lightsabre on my desk. You can never be too prepared, after all.

Serial Arsonist in Welland?

April 17th, 2008

I don't typically post from work, but this is really baffling and I just had to comment on it.

My office is about a block from Welland's main fire station. My office also gets incredibly stuffy, so on a typical day I have at least a few windows open. As a result, I hear just about every time a Fire Truck leaves the station (assuming they have their sirens on).

On a normal day, this seems to happen somewhere in range of zero to one times. Twice comes across as a busy day, at least to myself, a casual observer in this case.

Today is not a normal day.

Italic Text breaks IE6 Formatting

April 15th, 2008

I came across this bug while working on the layout for Life According To Duck, and thought I would share the solution.

When viewing the page in Internet Explorer 6, my main post
was appearing about 4 pixels too wide whenever italic text flowed from one line to the next. The offending text was in a child element, a
tag. Briefly stated, IE6 (and I assume IE5) seems to consider the width of the slanted text when computing the box dimension, which of course adds a few pixels to the right side. As a result, the background of the element was appearing wider than the graphical caps above and below it. Sure, it's only 4 pixels, but that's 4 too many by my standards.
